Module 3: Archaeological Analysis

Compasses and Euclidean Geometry

Archaeologists set up a grid system that can be used to map a site as well as record the location of the artifacts and features found at a site.  Various tools are used to establish a grid including a compass.  In this exercise,
students will become familiar with using a compass and how it can be used to create a grid.  They will learn about orienteering and taking compass bearings.  Students will also learn how archaeologists use Euclidean
geometry to square a grid and calculate distances within and between sites.
